Stipendien

Every year, the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (SICL) awards several van Calker scholarships so as to allow Swiss and foreign researchers to carry out scientific work in the field of comparative law, as well as in foreign and international law. The duration of the stay is generally between 2 and 3 months.

These scholarships are open to researchers from all over the world. We particularly encourage applications from those for whom opportunities and funding for research are limited and who are often under-represented in this type of programme.

Application file

Scholarship applications must be sent to Marie-Laure Lauria no later than 15th August of the year preceding the stay at the Institute.

To apply for a van Calker scholarship, please send us the following documents (in pdf format):

(Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.)

  • Letter of motivation (maximum one page): The purpose of this letter is to explain why you are applying for a research scholarship at our Institute.

(For example, what are your objectives and expectations for this stay? How will your research and your approach evolve before and after your time at the SICL? ...)

In order to better understand the concrete contribution that this stay will make to your work, please specify how the resources of our library will be particularly useful to your project, rather than making a general assessment.

  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages): Please submit an up-to-date CV. This should reflect your professional training, your previous and current academic activities, as well as your current position. Please also include your list of publications.
  • Research project (maximum two pages/word count): Please present a concise yet comprehensive research proposal for your stay at the Institute. It should not be limited to a simple bullet point plan or the general structure of your thesis. Your proposal should clearly outline the main aspects of your research, identify the central questions and challenges it raises, and specify the elements to be explored in greater depth in Lausanne. Write it in a way that is understandable to lawyers from different specialities. A work schedule is not required, but the proposal must be sufficiently detailed to allow for a relevant evaluation.
  • Letter of recommendation: Doctoral and post-doctoral candidates must provide a letter of recommendation from their research supervisor preferably. However, it will be all the more informative if it is written by someone who is familiar with your work and research. For other candidates, the letter of recommendation is optional

Documents may be written in French, German, English or Italian.

Scholarship award and conditions

The scholarship currently amounts to CHF 1,500 per month. In addition, the Institute takes care of accommodation for recipients during their stay.
